A sad grief surrounded the state of Tamil Nadu when the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi breathed his last on Tuesday. The minister was known as Godfather of Tamil Nadu by the state’s people. Gaining the respect from years and presenting himself as the five-time chief minister, he was very well known for his kind heart and for his love towards the people.
A well-known face in the political industry, even after his death, the minister and his family are facing some political issues regarding his burial on the Marina beach! Several people were against this decision and thereby the senior counsel P Wilson acknowledged a plea in favour of the CM stating that the CM was loved by the entire state and a proper, respectful burial is what he deserves.
M K Stalin gave a plea in an application to Edappadi to allot a space at Anna Square on Marina beach for a peaceful burial of the late CM M Karunanidhi. He also said – “It was right and proper to give this leader his due respects by laying his mortal remains next to his ‘beloved leader Aringar Anna’ to fulfil the wishes of millions of Tamil people.”
The request was declined and an allotment of ground near Gandhi Mandapam was released. A rage of violence between people emerged as the Chennai Government had already proclaimed Marina beach is a burial ground under the Municipal Corporation Act and there was no point in disagreeing to the plea.
Meanwhile, opposing the plea by DMK, the state decided to bury the remains of Karunanidhi in the 2 acre land allotted at Gandhi Mandapam. The state announced that the cremation ceremony will take place with state honours.
Many dignitaries came to pay their last visit to Karunanidhi, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Edappadi P, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit and actors like Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth.
Though the people were in grief, they filled the whole place with slogans in favour of the CM. The Godfather of Tamil Nadu has gone, but he will always remain in millions of hearts.
